Reliable Rockwell results start with trusted reference blocks. UPI Laboratories Europe BV supplies hardness test blocks and calibrated indenters so you can verify and monitor your Rockwell hardness testers with confidence. Our work on hardness testing indenters is performed under an ISO/IEC 17025 RvA accreditation, with international recognition through ILAC signatories such as UKAS, DaKKS or COFRAC.
Rockwell reference blocks are stable, well-characterized test pieces used to check the performance of Rockwell hardness testers. By comparing your instrument’s readings to the calibrated value of a block, you can confirm day-to-day stability, support adjustments, and document traceability. Because Rockwell measures the depth of an indentation under a defined preload and main load sequence, reference blocks help you spot issues related to load application, indenter condition, and machine setup before they affect production results.
UPI Laboratories supplies hardness test blocks that are consistent, clearly marked and easy to use in your routine checks. Blocks are carefully calibrated to ensure a uniform base material and a durable surface finish that supports repeatable impressions and clear readings.
Using reference blocks is straightforward. Select a calibrated block, follow your normal machine procedure, and compare the calibrated value with the block’s value and tolerance. Record the result, and if needed, adjust the tester according to your internal procedure and applicable standards. Regular checks help you detect drift early and keep your Rockwell measurements in control.
UPI Laboratories supports this process with accredited calibration services for hardness testing indenters and with high-quality tooling that keeps your setup within specification.
UPI diamond indenters are precision mounted to align with the diamond grain structure for long life and consistent penetration. Every indenter is dual calibrated to meet the requirements of ISO and ASTM, supporting dependable Rockwell measurements and smooth verification against reference blocks.
Our carbide balls are produced from the highest and purest quality carbide for accuracy, consistency and reliability. Each ball is evaluated with laser scanning microscopes and confirmed to relevant ISO and ASTM standards for Rockwell and Brinell applications.
UPI hardness test blocks are homogeneous, mirror or matt finished and laser engraved for clear identification. They meet or exceed the relevant ISO and ASTM standards to support structured impression layouts and efficient documentation.
Calibration of hardness testing indenters at UPI Laboratories are carried out under ISO/IEC 17025 RvA accreditation. This ensures measurement traceability and periodic monitoring by the RvA in the Netherlands, with international acceptance through ILAC signatories.
Traceability underpins every reference block and indenter we supply.

The Rockwell method is defined in ISO 6508 and ASTM E18. These standards set out the indenter types (diamond brale and ball), the applied forces and dwell times, and the correct way to read and report results. In practice, common regular Rockwell scales include HRA, HRB and HRC, while superficial Rockwell scales are intended for thin sections and surface layers. The choice of scale depends on factors such as material type, thickness and whether you need to avoid the influence of case hardening.
UPI supplies indenters and test blocks that meet ISO and ASTM requirements, while also recognizing that JIS standards may apply in certain markets. Whatever the scale, compliant tooling and calibration make it easier to compare results and to pass audits.
Consistent Rockwell measurements start with good practice. Always use certified indenters and replace them if they show signs of damage or wear. Verify your tester daily with certified Rockwell test blocks within the range you normally use, and keep dwell times, preloads and main loads consistent with both the standard and your internal procedures. Ensure the test surface is clean and flat so the indenter seats correctly, and space your indentations far enough apart to prevent interference from work-hardened areas. A stable testing environment with controlled temperature and minimal vibration further improves repeatability.
Finally, document all checks and calibrations to meet customer and regulatory requirements. UPI can calibrate your indenters and blocks under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring that your internal procedures align with external standards.
If you rely on your Rockwell tester for quality checks of shipments, you also rely on the tools behind it.
