UPI Laboratories Europe BV are specialists in the calibration and supply of hardness testing indenters and hardness test blocks for Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop and Brinell. We work under an ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA). That means measurement traceability, periodic monitoring and calibration certificates that are widely accepted through the ILAC network. Our diamond indenters are long life and precision mounted to meet ISO and ASTM requirements, and our carbide balls are calibrated with laser scanning microscopes.
A Rockwell hardness tester measures the permanent depth of an indentation made by a defined force and a defined indenter. The method uses a two-step load application: a preliminary force (minor load) sets the zero reference, then a major load is applied for a set dwell time and removed, and the remaining depth is read as a Rockwell value. Because it does not require microscopic measurement of an impression, Rockwell is fast and practical on the shop floor and in laboratories. It is widely used across metals processing and also applied to some plastics and composites where the relevant standard allows it.
In everyday use, testers work with either a diamond “brale” indenter for harder materials or ball indenters for softer metals. With correct setup and routine checks, Rockwell gives clear, repeatable numbers that are easy to compare between parts, lines and sites.
What they have in common is the need for compliant indenters, calibrated test blocks with traceable calibration. That is where UPI focuses: we keep your critical contacts and references within specification so your tester, delivers trustworthy results.
UPI diamond indenters are precision mounted in exact conformity to the grain structure for long life and stable geometry. Every indenter meets ISO and ASTM requirements, so you can use it with confidence across the Rockwell scales that call for a diamond.
Our carbide balls are produced from the highest and purest quality tungsten carbide for accuracy and reliability. We evaluate each ball with laser scanning microscopes and supply them to meet the relevant ISO and ASTM standards. Consistent diameter and roundness help your tester hold tight repeatability on HRB and other ball-based scales.
UPI hardness test blocks are manufactured from homogenous material, mirror or matt finished and laser engraved. They meet or exceed the relevant ISO and ASTM standards and are available with a NADCAP compliant grid when required. Using certified blocks for your daily check gives assurance before you test production parts.
UPI operates under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation (RvA). Our published scope on the RvA website shows what we calibrate. RvA is an ILAC/MRA signatory, supporting international acceptance of your certificates during customer and regulatory audits.
The Rockwell method is defined in ISO 6508 and ASTM E18. These standards set out the indenter types (diamond brale and ball), the applied forces and dwell times, and the correct way to read and report results. In practice, common regular Rockwell scales include HRA, HRB and HRC, while superficial Rockwell scales are intended for thin sections and surface layers. The choice of scale depends on factors such as material type, thickness and whether you need to avoid the influence of case hardening.
UPI supplies indenters and test blocks that meet ISO and ASTM requirements, while also recognizing that JIS standards may apply in certain markets. Whatever the scale, compliant tooling and calibration make it easier to compare results and to pass audits.
Consistent Rockwell measurements start with good practice. Always use calibrated indenters and replace them if they show signs of damage or wear. Verify your tester daily with Rockwell test blocks within the range you normally use, and keep dwell times, preloads and main loads consistent with both the standard and your internal procedures. Ensure the test surface is clean and flat so the indenter seats correctly, and space your indentations far enough apart to prevent interference from work-hardened areas. A stable testing environment with controlled temperature and minimal vibration further improves repeatability.
Finally, document all checks and calibrations to meet customer and regulatory requirements. UPI can calibrate your indenters and blocks under ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring that your internal procedures align with external standards. For aerospace programs, we also supply NADCAP-compliant blocks with the required grid layout.
If you rely on your Rockwell tester for quality checks or certification of shipments, you also rely on the tools behind it.
